Frequently Asked Questions
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition affecting blood glucose regulation. This course covers diabetes awareness, management, monitoring and person-centred care in Australian healthcare and aged care settings.
The main types include type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes. Each has different causes, features and management needs, which are explored in this diabetes awareness course.
Diabetes can contribute to complications affecting the feet, kidneys, nerves, eyes, heart and blood vessels. Regular monitoring and appropriate management can help reduce risks.
Safe insulin practice helps prevent medication errors and serious blood glucose problems. Healthcare workers should follow the person’s prescription, care plan and Australian workplace procedures.
Hypoglycaemia requires prompt action. Follow the person’s diabetes care plan and workplace protocol, provide appropriate treatment if trained to do so, and seek urgent medical assistance when required.
