Stroke Awareness training helps UK healthcare and care workers recognise stroke and TIA symptoms, understand stroke types, risk factors, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.
The two main types are ischaemic stroke, caused by a blocked blood vessel, and haemorrhagic stroke, caused by bleeding in or around the brain.
Common stroke symptoms include facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems. Use the FAST test and seek emergency medical help immediately if stroke is suspected.
A transient ischaemic attack (TIA) causes stroke-like symptoms that usually resolve within a short time. A TIA is a medical emergency and requires urgent assessment to reduce stroke risk.
Stroke treatment depends on its type and cause. UK stroke care may include emergency treatment, specialist stroke units, rehabilitation and ongoing prevention to reduce future risk.
