Stroke Prevention and Management Update

Stroke is a major global health concern and one of the leading causes of mortality and long-term disability worldwide. It occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, either due to a blockage or bleeding, resulting in rapid brain cell damage. The burden of stroke continues to rise due to ageing populations and increasing prevalence of risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. Early recognition and rapid response are critical in stroke management, as timely intervention can significantly reduce brain injury and improve patient outcomes. Advances in stroke care have emphasised the importance of structured emergency pathways, early imaging, and prompt treatment to maximise recovery potential. Public awareness tools such as FAST have also contributed to improved early recognition. Recent clinical guidelines have introduced important updates in stroke management, including expanded treatment windows for thrombolysis and thrombectomy.
