About The Course

This module explores the principles and practices of Open Disclosure as outlined by the Health Service Executive (HSE). Learners will gain a clear understanding of their responsibilities, including how to communicate openly and compassionately with patients and families following patient safety incidents. The course is grounded in HSE’s core values of care, compassion, trust, and learning. It emphasizes professional ethics, the HIQA standards, and legal protections under the Civil Liability (Amendment) Act 2017. Learners will also be introduced to the ASSIST model of communication to confidently contribute to Open Disclosure conversations in healthcare settings.

Learning Outcomes

Understand the concept and purpose of Open Disclosure in healthcare.
Recognise the importance of open, honest, and compassionate communication following patient safety incidents.
Identify the types of incidents that require Open Disclosure, including harm, no harm, and near misses.
Understand the HSE's Open Disclosure Policy and its application in daily practice.
Apply the HSE’s core values of care, compassion, trust, and learning during disclosure.
Follow the principles of incident management, including openness, responsiveness, and learning.
