Frequently Asked Questions

Health and safety helps protect care workers, residents, service users and others from harm by promoting safe working practices, effective risk management and appropriate workplace procedures.

Key Irish legislation includes the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007.

The five steps are identifying hazards, identifying who may be harmed, evaluating risks, recording findings and reviewing the assessment when necessary.

Care workers should follow workplace policies, use equipment safely, attend required training, report hazards and incidents, and take reasonable care of themselves and others.

Depending on the workplace and role, relevant training may include First Aid Response, Cardiac First Response and Occupational First Aid. Staff should work within their level of training.
