Frequently Asked Questions

Hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) is a highly toxic, flammable gas that can occur in workplaces such as oil and gas, wastewater treatment and agriculture. H₂S exposure can cause serious harm.

H₂S may be present in sewers, wastewater facilities, oil and gas operations, confined spaces and areas where organic materials decompose. Workplace risk assessments help identify exposure hazards.

H₂S can be detected using gas monitors and detection systems designed to measure hydrogen sulphide concentrations. Workers should follow workplace procedures for monitoring and respond to alarms immediately.

H₂S exposure can be reduced through risk assessments, ventilation, gas monitoring, safe work procedures, training and suitable PPE. Controls should follow the hierarchy of controls where possible.

Follow the emergency plan, move to a safe area and raise the alarm. Never enter an H₂S-contaminated area to rescue someone without appropriate training and respiratory protection.
