Frequently Asked Questions
Sickle cell disease is a group of inherited blood disorders that affect haemoglobin. Red blood cells can become rigid and sickle-shaped, which may cause anaemia, pain and other complications.
Sickle cell disease is caused by inherited changes in the gene responsible for haemoglobin. A person develops the condition when they inherit relevant gene changes from both parents.
Symptoms may include episodes of severe pain, tiredness caused by anaemia, swelling of the hands and feet, frequent infections and jaundice. Symptoms vary between individuals.
A sickle cell crisis is an episode of severe pain caused by blocked blood flow. It can require urgent medical assessment, particularly when pain is severe or accompanied by other serious symptoms.
Management may include medicines, pain relief, vaccinations, infection prevention, regular monitoring and specialist care. Treatment is tailored to the individual's symptoms and complications.
