Frequently Asked Questions

AMRIC standards support infection prevention and control in health and social care. They cover standard precautions, transmission-based precautions and risk assessment to reduce infection spread.

Standard precautions are infection prevention measures used for everyone, including hand hygiene, PPE, respiratory hygiene and safe handling of waste and sharps.

Transmission-based precautions are additional measures used when an infection may spread by contact, droplets or airborne routes. They are applied alongside standard precautions.

Use them when a person has, or is suspected of having, an infection requiring additional controls. Follow the infection risk assessment, local policy and relevant infection prevention guidance.

Assess infection risks, follow standard and transmission-based precautions, practise effective hand hygiene and use PPE correctly. Regularly review practices and follow local infection prevention and control procedures.
