Hand hygiene helps prevent cross-infection and healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs). UK healthcare workers should follow NHS and WHO hand hygiene guidance, including the recommended 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene.
HCAIs are infections acquired during healthcare. Common examples include MRSA, Clostridioides difficile and norovirus. Effective infection prevention and control helps reduce their spread in UK care settings.
The WHO 5 Moments are before touching a patient, before a clean procedure, after body fluid exposure, after touching a patient and after touching their surroundings.
Use effective hand hygiene, appropriate PPE, personal hygiene and standard precautions. Follow local infection prevention and control policies and NHS guidance to reduce cross-contamination risks.
Standard precautions include hand hygiene, risk-based PPE, respiratory hygiene, safe handling of sharps and waste, and environmental cleaning. They apply to all patients in UK healthcare settings.
