A stoma is a surgically created opening that allows waste or fluids to leave the body when normal bowel or bladder function is not possible due to illness, injury, or surgery.
Common options include one-piece and two-piece systems, drainable or closed-end pouches, pediatric pouches, and transparent or opaque bags, chosen based on stoma type, lifestyle, and preference.
Common issues include skin irritation, leakage, blockage, infection, prolapse, hernia, dehydration, and emotional distress. Early recognition and proper care help prevent serious problems.
Living with a stoma can impact physical health and emotional wellbeing, including body image and confidence. Good stoma care, education, support, and healthy routines help maintain quality of life.
