  • Define the terms 'continence' and 'incontinence' in regard to both bladder and bowel function
  • List the possible symptoms of urinary incontinence and faecal incontinence
  • Appreciate the importance of managing symptoms of bladder or bowel dysfunction
  • Recall the different types of urinary incontinence (namely: stress incontinence; functional incontinence; obstructive/overflow incontinence; and urge incontinence) and briefly describe how the types differ
  • Describe the anatomy and physiology of the lower urinary tract in men and women
  • Explain how you would go about assessing a patient's continence
  • Describe the anatomy of the lower bowel, and physiology of defecation
  • List the risk factors for urinary incontinence and for faecal incontinence
  • Describe appropriate strategies that may be used to manage someone's continence
